I would say that this is why the GAang can’t have nice things but in the end it helped Aang firebend, Sokka found his girlfriend and father, and Katara was finally able to confront the man who killed her mother. So … I guess it wasn’t all bad.

Bolin is NOT a 'nice guy'

Recently I’ve seen a few things in the Korra fandom in terms of shipping that refer to Bolin as the ‘nice guy’ or being ‘friendzoned’. At first I ignored it and kind of just rolled my eyes and let it be, but I see it more and more and more. So I kind just wanted to get my feelings out about the term ‘nice guy’, as I see applied to Bolin and a few reasons why it doesn’t fit.

1. From the time Bolin and Korra first met, I think it was pretty obvious that he started to develop a crush on her and the big thing here is that he seemed to present himself to her as that. As someone who was interested in her as more than just a friend, but also as a friend. She might have been oblivious to how he felt because she hadn’t interacted with guys on that level before, but the point is Bolin didn’t hide his intentions. He liked her. He was straight forward about it and he didn’t hide his wanting to date her behind a pretense of ‘just being a friend’.

That is a huge difference already between Bolin and the ‘nice guy’ because guys who fit that term, rarely do that. They always present themselves as completely nonthreatening and only interested in friendship. So then when they want something more, is it any shock it comes out of the blue to the girl when all they’ve ever acted like is a good friend?

2. Another huge difference is Bolin does not hate on other guys and tear others down in order to make himself appear better to Korra. A thing I’ve noticed about ‘nice guys’ is that when they’re with a girl they tend to try and tear other guys down. They make comments without even knowing the guys based on how they’re dressed, and talking about how they must be a certain way, or sometimes make comments about how a girl must like certain guys because they’re attractive as if that’s all that matters. Bolin never does that.

3. Bolin also never pushed a relationship on Korra. Often ‘nice guys’ feel that somehow because they treat girls like human beings and don’t hit them, that they instantly deserve whoever they want and will try and push and guilt a girl into a relationship. Usually this comes as a complete blindside to the girl, because once again all the guy has ever presented himself to her as is a friend. Bolin however, has never tried to guilt Korra into being with him. He’s never thrown what he did for her in her face simply so she’d be his girlfriend, or whine about how he was there when she needed him. ‘Nice guys’ are known for being whiny and constantly trying to guilt trip the girl however they can into being with them. Never taking into consideration how the girl feels.

4. This might be the biggest, but it’s what happened in the aftermath of being rejected. When most ‘nice guys’ are rejected they tend to react in one of two ways or a combination of both. The guy either persists, insisting the girl should give him a chance, claiming she lead him on, is a horrible person who only wants to date jerks that hurt her and recalling everything they’ve ever done for her and how she owes them. Or they just completely end all communication and act as if because they aren’t in a dating relationship or getting sex, the friendship meant nothing and they end it. It doesn’t matter that the girl may love them in a non-romantic way, or that she gave them her time and smiles and offered to help them with their problems as well and was there for them to. Nope. All that matters is they can’t get in her pants so they move on.

BOLIN NEVER ACTS THIS WAY! Is he hurt? Of course he’s hurt. He walked in on the girl he fell for kissing his brother and his brother kissing her back. And he does have the right to feel hurt, and upset and even angry because of what happened previously and because rejection sucks. We’ve all been rejected and it hurts emotionally and our pride and leaves us wondering what went wrong. However, it’s how he reacts after the initial rejection that separates him from the ‘nice guy’. Because while he’s hurt, he still doesn’t try to force a relationship on Korra. He might hope she’ll change her mind, but he respects the decision that she’s made and he doesn’t try to guilt her into dating him. Also he doesn’t end his friendship with Korra. Even though they’re not together, he still maintains his friendship with her, treats her with respect, and cares about her.

‘Nice guys’ don’t do that. Because ‘nice guys’ aren’t really nice. They’re actually just jerks who are hoping if they’re more subtle about what kind of people they really are, they have a better shot at getting sex and that’s really all they care about.

Bolin cares about Korra beyond whether they date or not. He cares about her as a person.

So Bolin really isn’t a ‘nice guy’ at all. He’s a good man. And there is a very, very distinct difference.
